Out of Hours and Extended Access

GP CARE WAKEFIELD (GPCW)

GPCW is an NHS extended access/out of hours service run by Conexus Healthcare but owned by Wakefield GP Practices to cover the entire population of the Wakefield district. It is staffed by local GPs, nurses and other healthcare professionals who can access your records to provide you with the safest care. For this reason there will need to be shared consent in place, therefore please ensure you give explicit record sharing consent when accepting an appointment with the service.  Patients who prefer not to give shared consent cannot access this service.

Out of Hours (OOH)

The OOH service with GPCW operates from 18:00 – 21:30pm Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 15:00pm on Saturdays and Bank Holidays, and 09:00 – 13:00pm on Sundays.   Our telephones will be automatically diverted during these times, but outside of these times please telephone NHS 111 or ring the the surgery during normal working hours if your need is not urgent.

Following triage of your problem by GPCW, if deemed appropriate the service will offer you a GP appointment at Trinity Medical Centre, Thornhill Street, Wakefield, WF1 1PG (TMC).

By broadening the availability of GP access to medical advice and support, patients will no longer need to attend A&E for conditions that are not suitable.

The service is not available for routine matters such as repeat prescriptions. This service is for same day needs that cant wait until the surgery re-opens.

Extended Access

In addition to the above, GPCW also offer extra pre-bookable appointments from TMC on evenings and weekends. These appointments are bookable up to 2 weeks in advance through our reception team. This means we can offer patients more choice, more convenience and shorter waiting times for routine appointments.  The service operates from 17:00 – 21:30pm Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 17:00pm on Saturdays, and 09:00 – 13:00pm on Sundays. Patients can be seen for:

  • Same-day appointments for urgent issues
  • Routine GP appointments
  • Routine nurse appointments
  • Dressings and clip removals
  • Blood tests
  • ECGs
  • Long-term condition reviews
  • Cervical smears
  • Spirometry
  • B12 injections
  • Repeat contraception reviews

GPCW can also order scans, tests, prescribe electronically, and make referrals to the hospital and other related services if you need them.

So whether you’re at school or work during the day, or busy with caring duties, if you’d prefer to be seen in the evening or at the weekend, please ask to book at reception.  NB: this is NOT a walk in service, appointments MUST be pre-booked through our reception.
