Mental Health

Caring for patients with Mental Health conditions

Maybush Medical Centre recognises the importance and value of investing in specialist mental health support as part of the care we offer to patients.

All of us can experience problems with our mental health at times. This can include anxiety, depression, and emotional difficulties, amongst other things. This can be triggered by life stresses, relationships, and bereavement’s etc. Around 40% of GP appointments now involve mental health conditions (Mind 2018). Should you require support for your mental health, or if you wish to be referred for our in house counselling service, you can make an appointment through our Reception. We can offer urgent appointments if you feel you are in crisis or in acute distress needing same day care.

Seasonal Flu Clinics

Flu Clinics

Every autumn, around September, we start our flu clinics. We aim to vaccinate as many of those at risk as indicated in the Eligibility section below. To read the full guide to flu, please click here.

This years flu clinics are:

  • 8th October 2022
  • 11th October 2022
  • 22nd October 2022
  • 26th October 2022
  • 1st November 2022
  • 12th November 2022

What is flu?

Flu occurs every year, usually in the winter, which is why it is sometimes called seasonal flu. It is a very infectious disease that can come on very quickly. The most common symptoms of flu are fever, chills, headache, pains in your joints and muscles and extreme tiredness. Healthy people usually recover within 2 – 7 days, but some people can develop serious complications and need to be admitted to hospital quickly.

Colds are much less serious and usually start slowly with a stuffy or runny nose and a sore throat. A bad bout of flu can be much worse than a heavy cold.

How do we prevent the spread of flu?

Flu is unpredictable and there can be different strains of the virus.  However, over the last ten years the flu vaccine has generally been very good at targeting the circulating strains. This is available every year on the NHS to help protect adults and children who are most at risk of flu and its complications.

Am I at increased risk from the effects of flu?

Flu can affect anyone but if you have a long-term health condition flu can make it worse, even if the condition is well managed and you normally feel well. Click here for our Easy Ready Leaflet all about flu and how to stop you getting it.

Nasal Flu for Children

Advice for patients or parents with faith concerns:

The nasal spray flu vaccine contains a highly processed form of gelatine (porcine, derived from pigs), which is used globally in many essential medicines.  Some faith groups accept the use of porcine gelatine in medical products – the decision is, of course, up to you.

For further information about porcine gelatine and this nasal flu vaccine, see www.gov.uk/government/news/vaccines-and-gelatine-phe-response

Non-NHS Services

The NHS does not cover some services under its contract and therefore we offer a range of private non-NHS services that will attract a private charge. Some of these services include:

  • Private sick notes (sick notes required for less than 7 continuous days off work)
  • Insurance forms
  • Holiday cancellation forms
  • Medical reports
  • Fitness to travel certificates
  • Private prescriptions
  • Bus passes
  • Some vaccinations services – notably vaccines for foreign travel.

Please download our fees for non-NHS Work:

Our fees for these services are in line with BMA approved national guidelines.  It is important to understand that many GPs are not employed by the NHS; they are self-employed and they have to cover their costs – staff, buildings, heating, lighting, etc. – in the same way as any small business.

Please note that urgent letters will take a minimum of 72 hours to complete and routine letters can take up to 2 weeks to complete.

More Information

You can read the FAQs regarding private work on the BMA website at https://www.bma.org.uk/pay-and-contracts/fees/why-doctors-charge-fees/why-does-my-doctor-charge-fees
